On Sunday, December 19, 2010 my wife Laura preached a great sermon at Clinchfield Presbyterian Church about the role of the Holy Spirit and Christmas.
The Holy Spirit anointed her to preach this message of Christmas, a powerful presentation of the Gospel and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as we say “yes” to following Jesus.
Watch this video recording of her sermon…
Jesus Christ Brings the New Era of the Holy Spirit
Luke 1:35
The angel answered [Mary], “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Notice the Old Testament language of the Holy Spirit coming upon Mary. This clearly has to do with power. The result is that Mary will conceive.
Fully Human, Fully Infilled
Though Jesus was fully human, nonetheless he had the Holy Spirit within from birth, whereas we are filled with the Holy Spirit at conversion.
The presence of the Spirit within Jesus allowed him the opportunity to develop an intimate prayer life with the Father from an early age.
Our Model for Empowerment
It was later in his life, when Jesus was baptized by John, that the Holy Spirit fell upon Him for the power to complete the mission for which He was born.
Just as Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit for His miraculous ministry, this Christmas the Father longs to empower us for our own lives and ministries.
