Learn more about healing ministry by reading the following excerpt from Lesson 1, “The Purpose of Christ’s Healing and Our Being Healed.”

The Biblical framework of  Creation – Fall – Redemption brings us to an issue that must be dealt with.

What is the purpose of Christ’s healing ministry and our involvement in His ministry?

God Heals Us to be Healers

The answer is ultimately found in the mystery of God’s love. He redeems us and begins to heal us simply because He loves us.

Why does Jesus involve us in the healing ministry

Out of this same love of God, our redemption and healing is for the purpose that we may be participants in Jesus’ work of redemption.

In summary, our healing–whether spiritual, emotional, or physical–is so that we may get up, follow Jesus, and be His witnesses.

The Purpose of Our Salvation

We see this dynamic of being saved and healed in order to be sent in Jesus’ ministry of healing and also in some of the summary theological statements Paul makes about the purpose of our salvation.

For example, a man whom Jesus healed and delivered from demon possession was sent as a witness:

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed. (Mark 5:18, NIV)

Paul writes about how we have been reconciled to God so that we may become ambassadors of reconciliation.

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
(2 Corinthians 5:17-20, NIV)

Four Fruits of Healing Ministry

This means that our focus can never be just on healing ministry – that would divert us away from God’s whole redemptive purposes.

We are to engage in healing ministry so that people may be:

  • Brought to salvation in Jesus Christ
  • Empowered by the Holy Spirit
  • Discipled into maturity
  • Sent out as witnesses
