PRMI Statement of Faith

The PRMI Statement of Faith

(Version updated by the PRMI Board, October 2015)

Through prayer and in consultation with the PRMI Board of Directors, this Trinitarian vision statement, with slight revisions in 2010, has directed our work and ministry since it was affirmed by the PRMI Board of Directors in 1991.

Exalting Jesus Christ!
Igniting the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit
under the authority of the Holy Bible as the Word of God
through
Prayer, Leadership Development, Growing The Church,
and Mission Outreach

So that the Church may be empowered to do
all that Christ commands

for the glory of God the Father

1. Creedal Foundation

PRMI’s foundation of faith is articulated in the great creeds of the Christian church universal especially the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed.

The Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son*, who with the Father and Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

* This is the Western version of the Nicene Creed. We welcome brothers and sisters from the Eastern tradition whose Creed reads: “who proceedeth from the Father.”

Out of our historic and theological roots in the Reformed Tradition and our special calling to work for the extending of the kingdom of God we affirm the following:

2. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church

“All power in heaven and earth is given to Jesus Christ by Almighty God, who raised Christ from the dead and set him above all rule and authority, all power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. God has put all things under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and has made Christ Head of the church, which is his body.”
(Adapted from BOOK OF ORDER PC(USA) 1987 G-1.0100)

3. We are Committed to Achieving the “Great Ends of the Church”

“The great ends of the church are the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the World.”
(Adapted from PC(USA) Book of Order 1987 G-1.0200)

4. We are Grounded Upon and are Guided by the Bible as the Word of God

We believe “The holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the word of God, the only rule for faith and obedience.”
(THE LARGER CATECHISM Q and A Number 3)

5. We Believe that Jesus Christ has Sent the Holy Spirit in order to Accomplish Four Basic Works for the Glory of God:

  1. That men and women may be born into the Kingdom God. John 1:12-13, 3:1-8.
  2. That those born into the Kingdom are being sanctified by the Holy Spirit dwelling within: their character being transformed to reflect the image of Jesus Christ. II Cor. 3:17-18, Galatians 5:22-23, Romans 12:1-2.
  3. That Christians may receive power and spiritual gifts to be a witness to Jesus and do the works of Jesus in the world. Acts 1:8. Luke 24:45, I Corinthians 12:4-11, John 14:12-13.
  4. That the people of God may be brought into fellowship (Koinonia) with one another and with the Father Son and Holy Spirit. I John 1:1-4, Ephesians 2:19-22, Acts 2:41-47

This statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs.

The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of humankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe.

For purposes of PRMI’s faith, doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, our Board of Directors is PRMI’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.

Affirmations Concerning the Contemporary Challenges to the Biblical Orthodox Christian Faith

1. Statement affirming that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation.

We affirm that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life and the only way to God the Father.

We affirm that there is no other name given under heaven by which humanity must be saved.

We stand in opposition to any creed, ideology, practice or rituals that promote any other way to God the Father and to salvation other than in Jesus Christ alone.

We are committed to the work of evangelism and mission that is led and empowered by the Holy Spirit, that brings the good news to all near and far that Jesus Christ is the only way of Salvation.

Our commitment is that all people, everywhere will hear the word God and may choose life in Jesus Christ.

For those who die without having heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ or have heard and rejected this way of life, we affirm that they are in the hands of a loving God who knows the depths of the human heart. We recognize that while Christians over the ages have had different opinions over the eternal fate of such people, we affirm that this is in the hands of God the Father and that whatever the outcome, it will be only through the Father’s means of Jesus Christ. If judgment it will be through Christ, if life, forgiveness and redemption also through Christ.

As for us, our task is to proclaim Jesus Christ to the world as the only way of Salvation.

2. Statement on the sanctity of human life

We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image.

Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death.

We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Ps 139)

We resist as not according to the biblical revelation of the sanctity of human life all ideologies, movements, and practices that would violate the sanctity of life.

We, as a ministry and as individuals, are committed to the reality that Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life and that his grace, love and forgiveness extends to all those who have in any way failed to live up to the biblical ideal.

3. Statement on marriage

We affirm that God created human beings as male and female and that together they reflect the image of God.

We affirm the biblical definition that Christian marriage is between one man and one woman.

We reject all other definitions of Christian marriage as inconsistent with God’s revealed plans for humanity.

We affirm also that we live in a fallen world and we take the reality of sin seriously.

However, by the grace of God the Father, the love of Jesus Christ and by the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit we are more and more reflecting the image of Jesus Christ, a process that will only be completed when we meet Jesus face to face.

We stand as witnesses to Jesus Christ and as a ministry and as individuals offer Christian fellowship, the love of God, forgiveness, and the transforming healing power of the Holy Spirit to all who have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
