Purpose of Dunamis Projects PDF Print E-mail

The fundamental purpose of the Dunamis Project is to equip an extended fellowship of Christians, both clergy and laity, to share in the ministry of the Holy Spirit to the glory of Jesus Christ.

A Biblical model of spiritual leadership is envisioned, embracing prayer, trust, mutual accountability and a full expression of the spiritual gifts for the advancement of the Kingdom of God and the building up of the Body of Christ.

This intention to develop Holy Spirit-empowered leaders is rooted in Scripture and is the key not only to spiritual renewal, but also to effective evangelistic outreach and the worldwide advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Luke 24:46-49

46
He told them, "This is what is written:

The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47
and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48
You are witnesses of these things.
49
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

(NIV)

Acts 1:4-8

4
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
5
For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
6
So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"
7
He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

(NIV)

The essence of the Dunamis Project is to provide a context where Christians may receive and experience these requirements for spiritual leadership as promised to us by Jesus Christ -- that is, to have the Holy Spirit in us for salvation and Christian character, and upon us for the power and gifts to be able to witness to Jesus Christ, starting in our own homes and churches and then reaching around the world.

The Dunamis Project is a context that may be used by Jesus to continue to fulfill Acts 1:4-8 and Luke 24:46-49 for the church today.

As we concluded the teaching the Holy Spirit fell on all present including the Bishops and there was a celebration with dancing. (One would think that would be normal in an African Anglican church but for many of the priests it was a first time experience of the joy and freedom of the Holy Spirit falling upon them for power. The Dunamis Project resulted in igniting a move of the Holy Spirit in the Anglican Churches that in turn brought life to congregations and a new passion for evangelism.

The Role of the Dunamis Project in the Body of Christ

It is envisioned that the Dunamis Project will produce Holy Spirit-empowered leadership for local congregations, prayer groups, evangelism programs and mission outreach. The roots of this ministry and the creators of this course are Presbyterian and Reformed and the material is especially designed for those in the Reformed family of churches; however, the Dunamis Project is for the whole body of Christ.

PRMI’s calling is to provide spiritual leadership for the movement of the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit is moving worldwide, this means that if we are obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit and are consistent with Jesus’ purposes to bring salvation to all humankind, then the Dunamis Project will have a cross-cultural mission expression.

It is envisioned that the Dunamis Project will be adopted and adapted to meet the leadership development needs of other sodalities, churches and movements within the body of Christ and the Reformed stream of Christianity that share the same vision and goals as PRMI.

Generally, in the USA, the Dunamis Project events are planned, organized and implemented from PRMI’s home office in Black Mountain, North Carolina. In other nations the planning and administration is delegated to the PRMI Dunamis Fellowship faculty members. The PRMI Executive Director, however, has administrative and spiritual oversight of the national and international programs.

Moving from theory to practice is an important part of the Dunamis equipping. So we teach on healing and then move into prayers for healing as led by the Holy Spirit. (A Dunamis Project track consists of all six of the five-day intensive equipping events offered over a three-year period.)

The demand and opportunity for the teaching is increasing. In order to expand the program as well as to be faithful to the vision of raising up spiritual leaders, others are being brought into the leadership of the Dunamis Project. As of August 2002, membership in the PRMI Dunamis Fellowship as a Faculty Member is required to be part of the leadership team for a Dunamis track or to be a part of the teaching team. The administration and spiritual oversight of the Dunamis Project is in the hands of the Dunamis Fellowship.

Brad Long has for years been the main teacher in the Dunamis Project. Now this teaching role has been taken up by the Faculty members of the Dunamis Fellowship. Brad has shifted to the role of equipping the leaders and teachers. In the Dunamis Fellowship are many people called, gifted and well equipped to provide the teaching and ministry needed for the Dunamis Project. This is how we are able to offer the equipping in multiple locations.

Both men and women, clergy and lay people, if they are called by Jesus Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, have mastered the contents, and have teaching gifts, are qualified to be called as Faculty members of the Dunamis Fellowship to teach in Dunamis.

The Dunamis teacher needs to not just know the materials but have a deep personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and have a firsthand experience of the cooperating with the Holy Spirit in ministry. Membership in the Dunamis Fellowship helps insure adherence to basic Christian doctrine.

The Dunamis Project founded in 1991, has been offered in a number of locations around the world. It continues to grow.
